1) Yes! You can incrementally add new items one-at-a-time to
your verity indexes. Its very simple: You just use the UPDATE
action to update your already-existing collection with the new
item. Just make sure that your new item has a unique key.
One potential problem when doing this, though,

There's a tag or 2 in the gallery to do this with ascii files.
So after Verity identifies a document with hits, you process
it right before you display it.
I had a developer modify his tag to put a link to all "hit words"
at the top of the doc so you could jump to them from the top,
and 2 links
