You have to have a ground. I can't remember where they hooked up, but I do
remember there was 2 wires for the speaker.
I would try one to the case and see if the light lights up.

I believe what you are thinking of was called a protecto plate. It was embossed with the VIN number and was used for warranty work at the dealer. the dealer made them up with the original owners name and it was put in a folder in the glove box.
