Question: I just bought a 400 sb short block it has trw high dome pistons
which will give it 11 1/2: 1 compression with 76cc combustion chamber heads,
can I get by with running SUNOCO 94 octane gas? Does anyone on list have a
400? If so how does it run, what carb, intake, cam, heads??
11 1/2 :1 is a bunch of compression for pump gas. I have seen it done
but every combo is different. I would use the thickest head gaskets I
could find. You will also need to put a big cam with plenty of
overlap to leak out some of the compression. While the heads are off
I'd cc everything
Hi, Doug.
You may get away with it in cooler seasons, evenings
and such. The sb-400 has siemeesed (sp) cylinders and
as such don't get a lot of cooling between them. They
may not ping much until you step on it! Not knowing
much else about the thermostat, radiator and
environment we just can't
94 Sunoco? You got 94 Sunoco? I'm in the Maryland suburbs of the Wash., DC
area and they took it off the market here about 3 months ago. All Sunoco sells
here is 93. Therefore my local Mobil is just as high octane and with good
detergents.

Been following the high compression SB 400 discussion, and wondered
about the availability of high octane gas in specific regions. I was
astounded to find 100 octane at ( I believe a Citgo) in a upscale area
of suburban Atlanta. It was $4.99 a gallon, but available
none-the-less. Also, is
It's available but look at what price! I can get 100 110 octane at a Mobil
station in Damascus, Md at about $5 per gallon but you can't pump directly into
the car. Must use a separate container. Something about state law. I can get
VP or Cam2 from various dealers and they're happy to sell
Been following the octane readings decision .Have a questions about the max comp ratio in order to install a SC? My comp is 10.3/1 in my BB. 454. Is that to high for a SC. Live at 6000 ft, so no problem with detention on 91 here in Western Colorado. Thanks in advance.

Jack,
That is a little more Compression than perfect for a SC
application. If roots style just underdrive the crap out of it. If
Centrifugal like my 70 Chevelle then you can just pulley it for less
boost.

10 seconds of pump gas fun!
Within a Half hour from home I have a choice of Torco (110 octane) and
Cam 2. Torco is a little cheaper than Cam 2. 93 octane is failry
common. Can't remember the last time I saw 94. Also the 100 octane
was mentioned a few years back. I contacted the vendor(Citgo I
think). No available
Has anybody tried the octane boosters you see in the auto parts stores? I
think one is called 104 or something like that.

Harlan, There are other guys on the list that are
further along than I, but let's for a moment
disconnect the linkage from the transmission. (Engine
off) There are specific detents that can be felt
just like when you are shifting from above. What you
can do to theck everything is to put the
You should be able to run the Sunoco 94. It may ping here and there though. I would try it first. you could always retard the timing a tad to make up for it. Worst case scenario, just mix some cam 2 with it. I've been running the Sunoco 94 in my 454 which has about 11:1 compression with no
Does anyone know of a good machine shop in the Northern VA area (or at least
within a reasonable distance) that has experience with high performance
machine work? Thanks.

Don't know for sure what tranny you have..400 or
350 but it sounds like the nut on the inside of the shift shaft has come loose
and let the park rod come loose and now won't let you disengage it from the park
pawl. Take the pan down and see..should be able to just pull the rod forward and
Howdy all.
I just purchased a car with the 700R4 trans,
and I've installed 13" rims and tires on it, lol.
Problem is, at highway speeds, it constantly shifts
back and forth between 3rd and 4th gear.
Any way to override that with a switch or something
so I can lock it in 4th at highway

I do not know what you really want done BUT one of our members in our
Corvette Club is in his early 60's and
owns Stull Tool Die in Frederick Maryland (301 662 1952) He is retiring
the end of this year but is going to
do some work out of his home for some of his regular customers
Dan, Drive faster lol.
Thanks Bob. I'll give him a call; it sounds like my kind of place.
