were the heat shields hard to put on, clearance wise?
No,

John;
I'd bet Mega torque could get you one. Thanks, I appreciate
your thoughts. I just try to help. I'm new here, but I have loved Chevelles for
as long as I can remember. And yeah, the people here are great. I think this
chevelle-list is allot of fun. I admit I don't know it all, and big
By the way, is it hard getting the shields on in a BB chevelle with headers?
Diane,
Thanks for the info. and I do believe you because I really don't know this being my first muscle car. It really does'nt matter who I get the answers for my problems from as long as they make sense and I admit that you seem to know a lot more about these things than I along with all the grea
Had the same problem. I bought a Tilton mini starter and have not had any
more trouble with the hot solenoid syndrome.

Well, speaking from years of owning chevys I can tell
you heat shields are a good investment. I had the same problem with several cars
and it went away instantly after adding the shield. Don't believe me? call "Mega

Also, on my Chevelle, I have a remote starter soleniod, and its up on the firewall, so it doesnt get nearly as much heat as the starteranother option for those of you having a big problem with hot starters.
I had
a starter heat problem with my old headers (Hooker), which were 1/4" from the
starter on by 350 Malibu (stock starter). The starter would not engage in
hot weather after being run. Occasionally I could get it to work
if the solenoid was hit when the ignition was on (a two person job +
Diane,
I heard that a heat shield is just another heat conductor and if you have the problem now, then it would just be a matter of time until the heat problem would rear its ugly head again that is, unless the shield is made of some special material.
Fellas,
I have the same problem on a 66 SS BB and I'm looking into a mini starter to rid myself of this problem because these work with teeth so I'm told versus a stock type with a solenoid. I really don't know much about it but I'm tired of taking my car out and not being able to turn it off for f
Yup, rule of thumb. starter heat shields are almost free. use one or

I have a 66 Chevelle, with a 454, with Hooker Super Comp headers. I have never ran a heat shield, and I live in Southern Cali...During summer it gets up to about 103 or so...and Ive been in that heat, in stop and goNever had any problems startingJust my 2 cents.

I find this whole issue fascinating actually- how
does the heat actually destroy the starter, when it
does nothing but sit there? Does it damage the
solenoid? Never thought heat would do that.

A question to the fellow header-users out there...
Is it pretty much a rule of thumb to have to use a
starter heat shield if you have headers? I keep
having problems starting my motor after it's been run
for a while, but if I give it a few hours and fires
right up. I'm pretty certain that it's t
