Another thing about the U-joint. If you shift back & forth from drive to
reverse with your foot on the brake, you should hear the clunk even if the
car is not moving. If it is a bearing, you will only hear the noise when the
car is moving.

Thanks a lot for the info, it sounds like my axle

Good idea Kurt. Usually if the U-joint is bad, it will clunk when you first
put it into gear. You also should be able to check for play there by jacking
it up and rotating the tires by hand like Kurt suggested.

Did you check the U-joint near the differential?

I'm
not sure about Chevys but I know that on Oldsmobiles up to 1968 the seal is
inboard of the bearing and the bearing is a sealed (permanently lubricated)
ball bearing. Beginning 1969 they moved the seal outboard of the bearing and
used tapered roller bearings, which were lubed by the gea
I haven't checked the oil level yet, I'll probably
try to check that tomorrow evening as well.
Thanks for your help,

Unfortunately
I don’t know what the spec is. Do you (or somebody on the list) have a service
manual? What happens if you jack
Oh, BTW, how is the oil level in the rear? It won't leak if
it's dry (or below the axle tube).

Galen, usually if the
bearing is bad the seal will go bad as well because of the extra pressure on
the seal (it will get knocked out of round). Look for leaking axle grease.
Usually if the noise
changes when you turn, it is a front bearing
Yeeek! I hope that's not the problem, but I
can't rule it out yet...

i had a clunking noise in the 7.5" rear under my 86 Cutlass. Well it turns out it had busted off a ring gear tooth. It got progressively worse and when it went, it ended up shearing 5 teeth off the ring gear. Pretty nasty, took me forever to get all the metal filings out. That was a Richmond ge
