So, after some experimenting, it seems that:
- the hanging happens when dragging segments. Cut and paste seems to
work without hangs. I don't know what to make of this (is dragging
really unnecessary?).
- the recipy from Getting media ready on your disk from Cinelerra

I've installed cinelerra-cv from the Ubuntu ppa, on Ubuntu 13.10
(iirc, it's not my computer). Our files are originally in AVI format,
I recoded them to mpeg2 using ffmpeg, cinelerra seems to only support
