When you need more ports available. With a 3640 you have four slots.
For example if you need more than 4 voice ports (fxo, fxs).

You're correct. It will need a DTE and a DCE cable. The part numbers
are CAB-V35MT(dte cable) and a CAB-V35-FC(dce cable).

I think the main advantage is easy to configure and troubleshoot. We have

You'll need to load the GRE module and put a simple rc file to
initialize the tunnels
