It seems your ATM connection is mapped to two different locations. Then you
should create two
point-to-point subinterfaces and don't use the mapping. A point-to-point
interface is just for one
connection only.

You should use subinterfaces in your ATM configuration to piny itself. Due
to an unknown reason if
you don't use subinterfaces the router just can't ping itself.
