The IEEE specification describes, besides other things, the Spanning Tree
protocol.
The IEEE 802.1W describes the Rapid Spanning Tree Algorithm and Protocol
(RSTP). It recommends that the RSTP be adopted in future MAC
implementations.
I was wondering if it is the Spanning Tree used in the
RSTP is pretty new and just starting to get adopted.

The Catalyst 4000, 6000, and 6500 series switches do not support Rapid
Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) in its native form, but Multiple Spanning Tree
(MST) (802.1s) uses a modified version of RSTP (802.1w). This
