ATM SVCs are used for many things. LANE uses them. You can map IP addresses to NSAP addresses and have SVCs do the call setup. CLIP uses SVCs also. There are even SPVCs that are hard coded PVCs on the edge, but use SVCs in the middle to allow for routing around failures. This is a method

Nathan, The SVC model was originally probably phone calls. Call brings up and tears down a circuit dynamically and calls can be muxed into larger ATM data pipes. Then with data, came core ATM networks with edge routers static mapped, then CLIPed, and then LANEd. These use many dynamic
