According to The Cisco Press Study guide the 5000 series is the "recomended" switch for the Distribution layer. It houses the MLS-SE III and the NFFC and can handle internal routing as well via the RSM. The 4000 however (and this is right outta the CP Book page 415) "is an extension of the 5000 se
