sounds like a typo to me. they've always been case sensitive for the entire
time that I've used them

Perhaps the software level has something to do with it. On the 5505
we're running 4.5.

It's the 1900 switch that uses case-insensitive passwords. The routers, ATM
switches, set-based switches, and XL switches have case-senstive
passwords...basically everything else.

I also just checked a few 5500s and found the passwords are NOT case
