Yes...it is a good background to complement Cisco. If you go to work at a
NOC or as a network engineer for a dot com or something, it is inevitable
that you will need to network unix stations.
Linux is a great alternative...I would suggest looking into Solaris 8x86.

I think this type of material should be on this group as we all need to have
many facets to our professional existence.

I think a good background in Unix would help to get a position at Cisco.
Most of their testing labs are using Unix.
What I have noticed is that most employers I talk requiring Unix experience
don't give too much attention for Linux knowledge.
I think it is not what they want to hear (yet)...

the reason for Unix, is that if your aiming at a Tac enginner position, they
all run Unix stations. i vivistead the europe tac (very impressive) and in
the lab i saw only sun wkst.
