I might be totally off here, because I am NOT a PIX firewall expert (yet).
However, I would like to give it a try anyway.
1) Does your PIX firewall have a model number on the box - 5xx ?
2) Does a "show ver" show anything about what model it is ?

You can look up the product by serial # on SCC (if you have a CCO account).
SCC - Service Contract Center (I think that's what it stand for)

That might give you an insight as to which PIX you have. As far as
upgrading the flash, you'll need a 16MB flash upgrade
You can't get 6.x on a Classic, 1, or 510. The latest you can go on
those is 5.3.
