configs. that is why we have no life; reboot after everone is in bed!

John,
Good point. If you can't trust debug, who can you trust? I didn't see the
implication. Thanks for sharing.

If you just deleted the sub-interface the router retains the interface
configurations. for example if you recreate the interface, all of your
configs will be there. I would recreate the deleted interface, do a 'no ip
address x.x.x.x y.y.y.y' then delete the sub-interface, and see if that
clears
That's probably the key, right there. I should have deleted the IP
address before deleting the subinterface. I haven't run into this exact
problem because of the strange order of events today. Things usually
happen in a more orderly fashion. In this case I decided to just reload
the router sin
That's true, but don't you think it's interesting that even debug ip
packet detail showed that all packets were leaving the *new*
subinterface? Obviously they weren't, but the router thought they were.
I've seen routers get confused before but usually debugging shows
what's actually occurring as
I don't know if I'd call this a bug or a feature but here's the scoop.
Originally, the source IP address was on S0.17. Then, S0.17 was
shutdown and this IP address was placed on S0.18. Things ran like this
for weeks.
Today, I went in and shutdown S0.18, moved the IP address to S0.19 and

Vince is right. That little warning that not all subinterface information
will be deleted until reboot is there for a reason.

did you reboot the router after deleting the subinterface ? I have seen
similar stuff with things like access lists, ISDn switch type,
and readdressed eigrp neighbors.
