Traceroute is simply a special ping with Time To Live (TTL) set beginning at 1. The first router that recieves the packet will expire TTL and send an ICMP error back to the transmitting router. The transmitting router is expecting this error and will log the IP address of the router sending the

it send a packet with lifetime 1 to the next hope, after the packet reach the destination, the lifetime is expirted, then it return a information tell the original it can reach the destination but the lifetime is expired, then original router send the second packet to destination with lifetime 2.
