I like that "plain English" part; the computer people I know do not normally
speak plain English.
Actually, I've had some fascinating (to a computer person) times with a
Sniffer and retransmissions. My aging DSS' expert analysis feature does

Forget about AutoNegotiation and set all nodes to manual 10 or 100 Mbps.
Also, Priscilla had some good questions. What kind of retransmissions are
those? What layer? The Expert Software in the Sniffer will tell you the
details broken down to a plain english language.

Any ideas on the quickest way to isolate the cause of these? We thought we
had it pinned down to the AS400, but we turned IP off on that last night and
we still had the same problems? Our sniffer shows that most of the
retransmissions are from workstations to the AS400.

I know that with any ethernet network retransmissions are normal, but can
anyone tell me a ballpark figure of what is acceptable. Using our sniffer
we are seeing approximately 30% of our network traffic as retransmissions?

Sniffer's "excessive retransmissions" Expert symptom is for TCP traffic (in
an IP environment.) So they probably weren't ARPs or broadcasts. I find the
story intriguing but confusing also. But it sounds like the AS/400 was
sending responses out the wrong port, so the client

I would expect the "broadcasts" that were seen to be ARP requests (but you
saw them as retransmissions? going out a different interface than where the
packet was received?). I'd personally love to see a few of the Sniffer
traces to see if I c

thanks for sharing and updating us. Just a few questions if you'd
indulge me, otherwise have a great day.
I'm kind of curious and very clueless since I don't know your network
architecture, but if you have a
t storm level, do you know why your routers were not
picking those up and routing them for the host? In other words, was ARP
working at the host and router level?

Thanks for the update. Was it really a broadcast storm? It sounds like it
was excessive retransmissions, which certainly could happen if static
routes were removed. Clients trying to reach servers across the AS400
(which presumably does routing) would just keep trying and trying. But the

cleaned up and deleted. Way to go Visions! Our AS400 folks didn't know any
better and just deleted static routes down from about a dozen to 4!!! Our
symptoms were major broadcast storms of retransmissions. Got to keep a close
eye on those big blue boys! Of course, as always, it

protocol wasn't configured to handle.
Please keep us posted with your success or failures

Could you clarify what problem you are trying to solve? Frame Relay,
itself, does not retransmit.
