It requires 3 years of experience in security work--provable experience. The Common Body of Knowledge is extensive. I've seen a number of job ads that look for the cert, though I cannot say that they really needed someone with that level of knowledge. CISSP Certification Examination – Applicant

It's value is fairly high although it's still a written test. It's fairly well known and most security people that work in the government have it. It is based mainly on theory not practical hands-on so it's a guide start prior to doing the more specialized vendor specific certs. John Kaberna CC
