This time, as I see it, it hasn't been too bad though clearly
uncomfortable. Wild Oats XI lost her main in 40 knots of wind. It's been
much, much worse. In the 1984 race, 104 retired out of 150 starters. THAT
was brutal. We got knocked down three times.

how bad 1998 was (six sailors died) but, frankly, I think 1984 was worse.
The really bad years come around about every seven years. Sometimes

We are at the end of the Thames River where it enters Long Island Sound, but
there is no current and it is pretty much salt water as far as I can tell. We
had so little rain last summer that I can’t imagine it was lower salinity that

The last two times I have bought headsails for Penniless, the sailmakers
have suggested dacron. It slowly degrades over time and can be re-cut. My
previous high-tech sails had collapsed suddenly (two out of four headsails
