Thank you everyone. We ran the engine a little over an hour and then at dock I drained the synthetic and replaced filter and oil with the usual non synthetic. I believe that a flush with clean oil in this manner is good for the engine anyway Mike Persistence Halifax

Fred, Pegathy's stern goes strongly to port in reverse, not to starboard, as yours seems to do. She does not, however, have the original v-drive, the PO had to replace it when reverse failed in sea trials during the survey. The PO was not happy, but I suspect he didn't have a clue it was about

The concern is that synthetic (with their detergents) will clean out the ring grooves and cause excessive blow-by and increase oil burn. Regular diesel oils - even single weight oils - have had detergent additives for many years. Certainly since I was an apprentice (in the '60's). So unless the

Pegathy has a two blade MaxProp. Seems to work fine, very good in reverse, although there is a lot of prop walk. There is also vibration, but this may or may not be the prop. I certainly would not trade it for a fixed prop. Dan Sheer Pegathy LF 38 Rock Creek off the Patapsco

Mike, There are some reports that synthetic oil may dissolve some of the residues left on different parts, which may lead to sudden increase of the oil usage. Of course, this applies to older engines. The general rule of thumb is that if you used non-synthetic oils in the past (and did it for

I made mine according to the instructions on the Photoalbum. $5 worth of aluminum floor edging and ten minutes work. If I had put another ten minutes into fancy finishing they would look better, but functionally they were fine. http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/doityourself/sailgate/sailgate.htm That's

If it is the correct grade and has the minimum rating requirements there is no reason to replace it. Synthetic oil could also be described as better filtered / refined / processed regular oil and its only drawback in most applications is that it is expensive. In an application where the oil

“Phygital” — when I bought my 1979 LF38 (hull #009) several years back, she had a folding Martec prop, which I hated. So I found the (most likely original) prop, a fixed 2-blade Michigan Sailer in a locker and swapped them out. The boat performs much better in close quarters with the fixed

Mike, there are SAE ratings for oil. Most modern oils have ratings that supercede the ratings of the oil for when the boat/engine was built. I've only ever run Amsoil HD & Marine Diesel synthetic 15w40 in my 3HM35F. No problems. Josh Muckley S/V Sea Hawk 1989 C 37+ Solomons, MD On Jul 23,

I would ask a yanmar dealer. Years ago I put 10w-40, instead of 15w-40 in a VW diesel and destroyed the engine within 1000 miles. Short term 5 hours it should be ok but I am not an expert.   Sent from my T-Mobile 4G LTE DeviceDoug Mountjoy POYC Pegasus (for sale) Lf38  Significant Other LF39

That was my complaint with the that prop on my LF38 hull #4 and Yes it is original. I switched to a fixed 3 blade it helped. I have a 3 blade max on my LF39 which is better still when docking. I will say that my LF39 docks a lot easier than my LF38 ever thought of docking.  Sent from my

Hi John, First suggestion is to check the Photoalbum site to se if your manual is listed in the resources sections. Then talk with a few old guys at your marina. If that doesn't work out well enough, post a few more details here and we'll take a stab at it. :) Cheers, Russ

Hi, We've been out a few times now on our 83 LF 38 hull 155, and I've noticed she's somewhat of a cow in tight maneuvering. It has a 2 blade fixed prop (original I believe) and doesn't have a lot of bite in close quarters (docking, maneuvering in marina, swinging stern around, stopping, etc

Bill, I installed a mast gate from Tom Luque at mastgate.com in 2013. At that time he was making them of quite thin SS, for use in smaller boats, and it bent when I put in a double reef on the main. So had a friend machine a beefier one from aluminum and that has worked
