In an effort to reduce constant dripping from a neglected winch fastened to my
deck support along-side the mast (common on the 80’ MK2) I removed it, cleaned
with Acetone and filled the holes with Life Caulk. That way my settee below
doesn’t get soaked each rainfall during our Vancouver winter.

I just saw a very short interview with the women on the news. Apparently, they
were swamped in a storm that washed the engine and damaged the rig. No more
info than that. Although, both women looked healthy and not very distressed.
They were found 900 miles off Japan.
one statement I found
I’ve installed both Ray electric ram and a hydraulic. The hydraulic is
slightly more resistance as Gary describes, but the advantage of significant
less amp draw far outweighs this.

Zeus2, I would recommend you use the Raymarine electric ram. The
hydraulic units have far too much drag and ruin the feel of the rudder.

Yes, but the report in the UK Mail says that they had a mast problem, and could
sail at 4-5 knots. I don’t see why that is a problem. The real question is now
they got “lost”. Did they have no navigational capability? No solar or wind
power? Also, they lost their cell phone overboard the
I was told that you could not put an underdeck on my 34+ and so went with a
wheel pilot. I have since learned that it is possible, and not really that
hard. I wish I had known it sooner, as I really liked the hydraulic unit my
older boat had. I would contact Colin Mack at Mack Sails. He did
FWIW, I signed on to having all the rod replaced on our 37’. I received a
quote, and I’m guestimating the labor costs because we are doing everything
rigging/lifeline related, that came in at around $9,000.00 to $9,500.00.
Hope that’s a good reference.

Hi Jim
I had Blackline do mine in 2010. I replaced the rod with wire. They also
installed radar on the mast, replaced corroded spreader tips, etc. Cost was
close to $6,800 minus taxes.
Cheap compared to the cost of the new motor I'm in the process of putting in.
By the way, we followed
I used the key way, but I understand that some rudders have the key way
extend down further than others. So you may be able to use the key way or
not.

Doug,
I “copied” Gary’s design and am happy with the results. My rudder shaft did
not have a keyway (Gary’s had one) so I ended up having to drill a 3/8” hole
through a 3” stainless steel tube with ½” thick walls. Edson makes an
appropriate tiller arm with a 3/8” hole pre-drilled. I used
Finally got a quote from Blackline. Initial estimate was $5K, full quote
was $10K.
I'm not sure what Plan B is at this point, that's double what I have heard
from others who have done the switch from rod to wire.

An excellent job; amazing how much more room there is on the 37+ than my 1985

Thank again Gary. This is very helpful. You did a great job laying everything
out and then executing. No mysteries now on what needs to be done. Great
installation.

Gary,
Did you just use the key-way or did you drill through the rudder post as
well? I really like how you installed it all at home and then just
glassed in the shelf!

Hi Kyle,
I have a C 27 that I have sailed on-and-off for several years (life and
work keep getting in the way).
I have had a single burner propane "swing stove" for several years. I tried

Hi Doug,
I had to cut a section out of the tube (terrifying) but it worked out
great. Just do all the reinforcing first, before you cut it so everything
stays lined up. The tube supports the deck. See pictures below:

I have a 37/40 xl. We have a racing jib on board that we are considering
cutting and modifying for a cruiser friendly jib. It has battn pockets ( no
battens) and goes all the way to the deck. No uv fabric. It has only been
used 2 seasons so is in good shape.
Anyone have a cruising jib to trade?
Thanks Josh. Very helpful.

Thanks Gary. Was a portion of the rudder shaft exposed, or did you have to cut
a section of the tube away to install the arm for the auto pilot ram.
