I may be showing my bias for centerboard boats and bashing to windward would not be fun whether the board was up or down. However, you likely would have pointed better with the board down, consequently shortening the trip and unpleasantness of the final 5 days. Charlie Nelson1995 C&C Xl/kcbWater

Much agreed. I have owned several. Fortunately the blades can be replaced in the handles because I get carried away on the PUSH stroke sometimes. And about the only thing I bought when went to school in Japan was a lot of beer and a motorcycle…. ;-) Regards, Dave Godwin 1982 C&C 37 - Ronin Ree

Seeing the reference to the Japanese hand saw for the centerboard issue I have had a Japanese hand saw for decades. Awesome tool. I bought it when I lived in Japan. For those who aren't familiar with them, the teeth face opposite of European/American hand saws. It cuts when you PULL it

Richard, Indeed. And it pleased my wife that I got rid of some “junk." As regards rarely sailing with the board down, I spent ten days last May, bashing our way to Portsmouth, England, of which the last five were 24 hours a day of 35+ knots on the nose. No need for close-hauled, board down wind

I don't know if the Crusader's centerboard is 'weighted' or not--discussion of rust, etc. makes me think it could be. If so or just in case, NEVER have anyone under it while working on it unless the board is prevented from fully dropping all of a sudden.  If my 1000 lb. centerboard let go from th

David, That was discussed. The new owners are a young couple, in the Navy. Neither have a lot of sailing experience or finances. Shoe-string budget but big plans to sail away. I think that they will be fine should it remain in the “up” position. As an aside, I gave them all the old hardware, b

Joe, Yes, the board is on and in the up/shallow draft position. We were looking at it yesterday and I suggested the barnacles but it appears to be a much more serious problem; it’s composed of sort of ferrous metal, probably iron, that has rusted and flaked over a great deal of time. This has c
