I've used Stugeron a lot and highly recommend it to all my crew when we go
offshore. I take it for the first 36 hours or so at sea and then that will
be it for the trip (that's just me though. I tend not to get seasick) The
only time I've had seasick crew is when one guy didn't take it.
Just check out the intensity (lumens) and get really bright ones that also have
low intensity and of course red.
I haven't sailed the Southern Ocean, but I've done a lot in the Atlantic and
Caribbean and I still haven't found a headlamp (including Petzl) that can stand
up to the salty goodness tha

Yeah, the life raft is a big nut and one where you hope you never get your
money's worth from it.
I recertified my 6 man raft in 2014 and it was about $1100. Unless you are
going to do a bunch of offshore sailing, a rental may work out better.

I'm late to the conversation but I have 8 golf cart batteries that gives me
900ah at 12 volts. Has worked well for me since 2009 and is cheaper per
ah per year than anything else I could find. You just need to find enough
space for them as they are tall.

of years old and would certainly predate GPS.

I won't be sad to see West go. Their prices were good when they came in,

There are always boats looking for race crew here, but if you're not in the
network of sailors it can be hard to get started.
If he has any sailing connections he should leverage them.
If not, print up a flyer and post it at all the chandlers and yacht clubs

I have both an SSB and satphone on board. I've also been offshore getting
smacked by the NE side of a named storm.
We used the SSB for regular updates with the nearest shore based station
(Bermuda Radio) and also used the SSB for sending and receiving email and
weather data. It's great for that
