The point of these inflatables is to give you enough buoyancy to keep your head
and shoulders up out of the water, and lean you on your back to keep you from
inhaling the ocean. You cannot possibly try to swim forward like that; but
since you’re on your back already, try the backstroke. It

Did the PFD have crotch straps? I've only seen demos luckily, but it seems
like the straps will keep the vest closer to the body which should give a
marginal increase in mobility. Too many sea nettles to try it anytime soon!

Joel,
This PFD was an older Mustang model without crotch straps. I do think the unit
being loose around the waist contributed to the issues. The top of the vest
did come in at an angle and slid up a bit on inflation. I notice that there is
a crotch strap add on for my Mustang hydrostatic
Mine does. Which one are you looking at? I’ve got the “Y” tether with one
six-foot leg and one three-foot leg; both of those have the positive-action
carabiners. The harness end has a snap shackle with a pull-lanyard. Like

I don't recall - one of the early posts on the subject. At the price of these
at pyacht I might be tempted to replace my "spare" old style tethers.

Spinlock, Pretty universally acknowledged as the best. I use mine with West

Another +1 for the Spinlock. All night on-watch comfort. I always wear it when
I'm out on my powerboat too.

Whichever one you buy, make sure it has a loop or other way to attach
strobe and whistle or comes with them.

I am surprised to see that the Kong tether as illustrated does not have a
snap-shackle for use at the harness end to enable quick disconnect if needed.
With any tension, you'd need to cut the tether in order to get free if you
were, say, trapped under water.

I have the Kong double tether and highty recommend. You won't find a
cheaper/high quality 2x tether. (required for offshore racing). At a Safety

antenna strobe and spray hood., I can tell you that this appears to be the

My wife and I've both had the Mustang HIT Inflatable Life Jacket / PFD with
Harness for about 5 years now. Very comfortable. The Neoprene Comfort

Hi guys, I'm to buy an inflatable life jacket with a harness and tether and I'm
looking for recommendations. I'm told I should get hydrostatic. These things
run up to $400. Then there is a mustang version on sale at defender for $259.
I'm interested in what you guys use or recommend. We don't

You really should try them on. Buy one with a harness built in and buy the
crotch straps for another $12.
I have a Kong double tether simlar to this:
