An ad popped up on FB for a "boaters" first aid kit for a ridiculous
price of $200+. The wee orange Pelican box was probably half the cost,
but I digress.
Concerning inland and coastal sailing, it made me wonder what should be
in a marine FAK? From my limited experience, I'd say the items that

I'd like to buy an offshore first aid kit. The large ones, even on sale
at Defender, are $450. There are lots of cheaper kits from Zee Medical,
ULine, Orion and even Bass Pro Shops.

training beyond basic first aid.
Joel,
Most sporting goods stores and camping supply outfits has some good robust kits
for a fraction of the “marine” prices. How detailed a set will depend on you
and the requirements. I have a pretty good set on board which I got for under
$100, but I don’t go more than a few miles offshore
Joel,
I've also heard quite a few recommendations for the whole offshore crew to
have advanced medical training. No matter how good the first aid bag is
and how good your wife is, what if she is the one injured? AEDs are also
becoming a regular addition to offshore kits. I recommend it.
You
Josh,
Advanced training would be worthwhile, but i'd probably pass out during the
course!
In the Safety at Sea seminar they made clear that if you have a heart
attack and no AED you are dead. No one can do CPR long enough for a boat
or chopper to get to you. Sobering stuff!
During the Bermuda
I can see it now ... Happy Birthday Honey! ... I got you this nifty offshore
1st aid kit! Oh ... did I not mention we are going offshore this summer?

Josh,
Advanced training would be worthwhile, but i'd probably pass out
where you will be going. Or ask the
wife. Then buy what you need.
