The Perko hasp on my companionway hatch disintegrated and I was going to
replace it with stainless but had trouble finding one the right length. All
Westmarine had were shorter ones, and that was mostly what I found online as
well. Eventually I stumbled on an exact replacement and ordered that
I replaced Touche's Perko cowl vents with the same chrome Perkos. Before I
installed them, I sprayed them with 3 coats of Superior Shield
fluoropolymer protective coating (Shield Products Tel 904.880.6060). Over
10 years and no significant pitting.

Around salt water, Perko is notorious for pitting and falling apart. It's
usually chrome plated brass. Most owners replace with solid stainless parts.

plating, maybe with a wire wheel and then a buffing wheel. If they're
brass, it's probably not worth the bother, as brass doesn't seem to hold up
as well.

So I have these pitted Perko chrome hasps. Since I do not like to throw things
out if they can be refreshed, I was wondering if anyone has had success sanding
and repainting/refinishing them...
