I did mine three years ago, here's what I did;
a.. scraped down to bare wood, two coats of epoxy (special clear).
b.. Two coats of Ephanias gloss varnish.
c.. Taped off the stairs except where I wanted the treads, applied one coat
of gloss
needed.

the companionway, if so what did you use and how well did it stand up to all
