Following the extremely windy weekend, we had a female Lazuli Bunting visit
the backyard yesterday evening. Only the second time I've seen this species
in Lake County. A Spotted Towhee stayed all day, also unusual at this
elevation.

We've all seen placid Cattle Egrets grazing bucolically among a herd of content
cows. Look how well they get along! At least up until now.

chase trip with John
Drummond as leader. Our hardy group of a dozen braced into

Earlier this morning, Tuesday, May 25th, I stepped outside my house in
Lafayette, Boulder County, for a nonbirding errand. In just a few minutes out
there, I observed:
3 Western Wood-Pewees
1 Least Flycatcher
1 Northern Waterthrush
3 Wilson's Warblers
1 flyover White-crowned
Fern Ford and I were at Walden and Sawhill Ponds early this morning and also
saw many migrants and breeders. I was amazed at the number on or near the
ground, especially several Western Tanagers. Also seen were a Virginia's
Warbler, a singing Wilson's Warbler, Warbling Vireos, Western Wood
David Wald organized a small group from the CO School of Mines, and we
birded Lower White Ranch OS this morning from 7:30-9:30.Great birdy
morning! Highlights included
Bullock's Oriole (lots)
Western Wood Pewee
Broad-tailed Hummingbirds
Yellow Warbler (lots)
Yellow-rumped Warbler
If anyone happens to find any good spot(s) for Mountain Plover,
Chestnut-collared Longspur, and Ferruginous Hawk anywhere on the Pawnee
National Grasslands, or nearby in the next couple of weeks, can you please

Both days, it has been cool and active until about 10 a.m., and then the heat
kicks in and the birds take shelter. Ah, yes, and wind. We are in the mid-20s
for new birds now, with a few cool first of season and unusual birds each day.
Today, we have a first ever at the

A small influx of migrants today , highlights being Red-eyed Vireo at
both HQ and Holmes , numerous Warbling Vireos , Ovenbird at HQ ,
Orange-crowned Warbler and Wilson's Warbler at HQ , Swainson's Thrush at Rose
, HQ
and Holmes , just a few Yellow-rumped , female Indigo

If you're tempted to come up to Rocky for any of this week's great
birds, you might want to stop at Lake Estes and the Matthews/Reeser
Bird Sanctuary. We're still getting some interesting birds there, as
well.
Today there were a half dozen bobolinks in the Sanctuary, all of
