Taking the garbage out just now, I was pleased to hear a Nighthawk
calling in the low cloud ceiling. They make me happy and I find it to
be a iconic sound of summer, along with the busily chattering Chimney
Swifts and the plaintive Lesser Goldfinches that arrived late last
month.

Jeff and I spent Thursday wandering some of the back-roads of the
northeastern portion of the state. We enjoyed the cool cloudy weather
and light winds. The birding was outstanding with few real surprises,
but a good number of the standard breeders.

This afternoon (6/9), there were two Broad-winged Hawks in Welchester
Tree Park (w. 8th Ave. west of Simms). One appears to be a juv.
light-morph bird; the other appeared darker, but I didn't get a clear
look at the breast. Both were very vocal, and on several occasions, were
seen perched with
