returned. On May 31, an adult Red-headed Woodpecker was seen at Owl
Canyon Road and SH 287 - a quarter mile from the junction (second
house on left heading east). A first for me for Larimer.

The Broad-winged Hawk first found by Lewis continues at Welchester Tree Park
as of this a.m. This is the light morph bird. I was not fortunate enough
to see the other hawk described by Schottler yesterday but at one point this
morning I thought I heard 2 separate hawks calling.

I think the clear day in Estes Park while it was overcast in the valley
all day yesterday worked in our favor.
We saw an ovenbird and a female Chestnut-sided Warbler in the marshy area
of the Matthews-Reeser Sanctuary this morning.
The ovenbird actually sang briefly at times.

The YC Night Heron was posing today on a log; the headline in the
Tribune drew a few additional birders as well. One thing I thought
was odd was one of the cormorants drying themselves off near the YCNH,

As of 5:00 p.m. when I left, the western gull was on the swim beach at
Chatfield, mixed in with the geese and few remaining sunbathers. From sometime
before 3:00 until just before 4:00, it had been on the Plum Creek delta, then
swam out about 50 feet before flying to the north and then west. I
I was hiking up Meadow Mtn near Vail.Ipassed a small marshy area
at about 8500 ft and heard a Virginia Rail.I have never had this
bird up here in the mtns.

As Tammy hadn't seen the Broad-winged Hawk yet, we went over to Welchester
Tree Park about 6 pm and before we could find the hawk, Tammy found a
singing female Chestnut-sided Warbler. We first had it near the entry
bridge over the little canal and when we left, it was in the SE part of
Cobirders :
Bob Shade and myself found a new sign at the gate into the field that
traditionally holds Chestnut-collared Longspur , SE quadrant of the
intersection of Weld CR 114 and US 85 . You now need to OBTAIN PERMISSION
before entering the field , either by telephoning
