I have been looking at this gull for a while and I think it is a
juvenile/first cycle herring gull but it seems too dark and charcoal
colored.

Bill, I believe this same individual was in Larimer County in December. Here
is a photo I took at Lake Loveland on Dec 28:

When did you first start seeing it? I agree it is a confusing bird. I saw it

Darn, I was trying to get in and out of Barnes Noble without being noticed .
Although there were zero gulls at Lake Loveland, there were 5 gulls (all
Herring Gulls) on the ice shelf at Boyd Lake (30% open). Horseshoe Lake had no
