It is clear that none of these five Mississippi Kites is a hatch year
bird. They lack the brownish overall coloration brown ventral streaking seen
on juvys.
Two are adults at least one may be a sub-adult ie, a one year old
individual. I hope to get better photos, flight photos, etc, soon. The
Yesterday I stopped by Last Chance and it almost broke my heart. Much of the
town and importantly, it's famous migrant trap, was burned out by a wildfire on
June 25. The fire burned 45, 000 acres. The pond is still present but all of
the ground foliage and leaves on trees and shrubs are
Enticed by Steve Mloldinow's post about shorebirds at Prewett and Jackson
Reservoir, I checked it out this morning. For me the most interesting sighting
was a Golden Eagle sitting at water's edge amongst many shorebirds. Was he
masquerading as a shorebird? As I dug for my camera he departed.
Today we had our first-ever day with 3 hummingbird species in our yard. This
morning we had one male R ufous. This evening we had two Broad-tailed and one
male Calliope. It was the first time we had ever seen a Calliope in our yard.
It was really fun to have them here.
