After seeing Bill Kosar's great photos of a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron he
found this morning at Brush Hollow Res, north of Florence, I drove out
there. The water level of that lake is astoundingly low and the area with
trees is about a quarter mile from the lake. As small as the lake was it

I was able to see the Little Blue Heron with Bob Canter about 7 p.m. tonight
(Sunday) on the South side of the creek. At Lowell Blvd. (Adams County).
It is a juvenile (white plumage) with blue on the wings. According to
Sibley, this would be a second year bird.

I had a picnic lunch at Glenmere Park at about 4 pm. There was no sign of the
famous kites. Then suddenly about 4:30 pm the group of 5 were all flying high
above the lake, apparently having arrived from the East. Then there were 6.
Then there were 7. Finally there were 8, and coming in for a lan
Today, we had 3 American Three-toed Woodpeckers along the trail to The
Crags in Teller County. First, we saw a lone female. Later, and a fair
distance from the first, we had a pair, male and female. In the wake of the
Waldo Canyon Fire, I suspect a good number are in the Pikes Peak region.

I saw this bird on the east side of Brush Hollow Reservoir near Florence
this morning. I think it is a juvenile Yellow-crowned Night heron based on
the plumage, bill shape, bill color, etc.

Thanks to Tom Pollock and Mark Chavez for pointing out the Mississippi Kites to
us before we even parked the car ! After Mark and Tom left, the Kites flew to
the trees on the south side across
from the rookery, where they came in on lower branches and stayed for quite
some time.

I have observed several singing males in our atlas block Hygiene SE
but am trying to find some birds that have avoided multiple hay cuts
for a successful nest
Mark Chavez and I are at Glenmere right now getting photos of the
Mississippi Kites. We were lucky enough to have them within 5 minutes.
They've been flying over the pond and are currently in a tree in a private
yard right next to the park
