I have been in Lamar since last Sunday night. Since the weather has been
rather problematic and the birding rather slow, there have been no posts. But
a summary is probably in order, if for no other reason than to provide info for
planning purposes.
Monday was a cool day featuring a dust stor
I visited the beautiful Cottonwood Canyon in Baca County today, southwest of
Springfield, CO, with 4 birding companions. It was a chilly day (low 50s
Farenheit) with intermittent rain showers. We spent 4 hrs there from 11:30 a.m.
to 3:30 pm. Birds were plentiful, including several resident speci
Seven people joined me today for some early spring birding in eastern
Colorado. A few interesting notes:
1) Very few trees are budding in the Limon and Last Chance areas.
2) Prewitt Reservoir and Crow Valley Campground were almost birdless AND the
trees look like winter.

Yesterday, a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker visited my yard briefly before being
chased away by the nesting Lewis's Woodpeckers. I am hoping returns to try
for photo. Also, an early Western Tanager (spanking male!) was in the yard

Near Hotchkiss yesterday, a Black Phoebe and Gray Flycatcher were se
We heard a bird (could not find it to view) last night in yard that I
could not identify. It made repeated "ree ree ree ree"-style call
from our evergreens. I'm familiar with lots of calls especially local
ones and don't recall hearing this pattern before in area.
Any ideas?
