This morning I saw a Dark juvenile Broad-winged Hawk perched over the
Poudre River and then it flew and perched at the Poudre Bike trail and lee
martinez (trail from parking lot) intersection in a crack willow.
Also of note was an eastern Hairy Woodpecker and a House Finch carrying

I walked around Weld CR 114/Hwy 85 SE corner this morning hoping for an
early Chestnut-Collared Longspur--just Horned Lark and Western Meadowlark
today. This is often deemed as a can't miss spot for Chestnuts in
spring/summer--BUT--requires a renewable permit (or else your trespassing)
Pair of Upland Sandpipers today (3/13) on rail fence at Monte Vista NWR, west
side of Hwy. 15. No, these were not Yellowlegs. Also, Canvasbacks on tour route
and Gre at Blue Heron overhead, plus misc. geese, waterfowl, and cranes at
refuge.

A Northern Saw-whet Owl calls incessantly every evening from just north of
our property line. This is an area of several acres that did not burn in
the High Park Fire. Last night at dusk, a Northern Pygmy Owl joined in and
both owls were calling. Music to my soul!

we happened on a corvid foraging in some pine trees. Our first impression

Yes but not too early for a displaying woodcock. The vocal note, uttered from
high overhead, is very similar, and the location near the River is compatible.
If it is a territorial woodcock, it should call again tomorrow night as well
and maybe also predawn.
