Here are selected highlights from a full day of birding in Las Animas, Baca and
Prowers Counties yesterday Apr 24 (I am guiding a group of 7 birders around the
state this week).
BENDIRE'S THRASHER (possible) - south of Higbee on Hwy 109 in a cholla field.
Had the jizz of a Curve-billed Thrashe
I visited Bobcat Ridge west of Fort Collins today and found a Northern
Mockingbird, FOY White-throated Swift, FOY Chipping Sparrow, FOY Pine
Grosbeak and located a Red-tailed Hawk's nest. A fine day in itself,
however, the jewel of the day was a displaying Dusky Grouse. I managed to
get a few n
A few first of the year birds in the Canon City area:
- Western Kingbird on power lines next to H115
- House Wrens-two singing their hearts out in Holcim Wetlands
- Green Heron in Florence River Park (seen yesterday and today)
Also watched a large flock of White-throated Swifts stopping
Flying over the Diagonal and Jay Road a pair of Swainson's Hawks

I spent Apr 22 and 23 roaming around Park County, focusing on the southern
portion of the county. I run down the highlights and things of interest to
me below, but tops among them were a Red-necked Grebe, 2 White-winged
Scoters on Apr 22, and a Black-throated Gray Warbler on Apr 23.

Hello!
I went out to see the Burrowing Owls yesterday morning in extreme northwest
Douglas County (not far from Chatfield State Park) and saw eight owls between
8-9 am. It is a beautiful setting below the Front Range hogbacks on the edge
of the plains.
