Thanks to everyone for the responses. Everything I have read says a
Mexican grackle is the same as a great tailed grackle. .I was surprised
to see him b/c I didn't think they were found in Colorado, but I was wrong.
The Audubon Guide lists them as uncommon in Colorado during breeding
season, but
It's sad but interesting about the finch behavior. I had know about crows
doing this, called a crow funeral, but not finches. I have however seen
behavior like this in two other birds species.
The more recent one also involved a Cooper's Hawk. I had gotten home from
work late afternoon to find
Common Poorwills are now returning to our foothills. They are among my favorite
birds, and fortunately they are regular and relatively numerous here where I
live at Ken Caryl Valley.
I will host a relaxed evening outing this Thursday May 6 at 7-9 pm to search
for poorwills at private open
This afternoon at my home in Fort Collins I was watching a flock of 30 or
so tree swallows flying far over my back yard, several hundred feet high,
when hail started falling all around me. A second or two later the swallows
dove, as a group, in a straight line at full speed. Fast! When they were
Indeed, but had to look that up. Fascinating. TIL that Mexican
(Great-tailed) Grackles were likely introduced to N. America by the Aztecs
- at least according to wikipedia.

Another slow day today which had us closing early due to high winds. Before
shutting down a few hours early, we banded 3 birds and had one recapture.
Lincoln's Sparrow - 1
Yellow-rumped 'Myrtle' Warbler - 1
Yellow-rumped 'Audubon's' Warbler - 1
Downy Woodpecker - 1 recapture from 9/27/2020

I once witnessed a Cooper’s Hawk killing of a juvenile Blue Jay and the grief
of its parent that about broke my heart.
The Cooper fled over my yard and for some reason dropped its prey. The parent
had been chasing and squawking after the Cooper, but stopped and perched on a
tree limb when it
Aren’t Mexican and great tailed grackles one in the same? Or is the Mexican
a specific variant (similar to Mexican ducks and mallards until recently)?

Glad you all were able to witness this behavior.
It's sad, but how incredibly interesting that they are so very social and
bonded.
I was able to watch this behavior a couple times; once in Southern Africa
with lesser striped swallows doing what looked like trying to revive their
dead comrade and

Still very slow, but the species we are catching are changing. Caught our
first Yellow Warbler, arriving right on schedule (about the only species so
far to do that), and our second Wilson's. House Wrens are present and
singing, but haven't been caught yet. Just 5 new today:

that tree for 2 hours, very cooperative, now reported as singing

Hello-
I've continued to host rosy finches in my yard at 8000 feet in Snowmass
Village, up to 500 birds at a time of three species. Today, unfortunately, two
of the Brown-capped rosy-finches crashed into a window and died. What followed
was sad and remarkable. For about the next hour, up to
Hi Birders,
I remember a few years ago there was interest in Cattle Egrets at Lake
Arbor in Jefferson County. They’re back!
There are 4 egrets in the grass on the north side of the lake, just east of
Lamar Drive, chasing grasshoppers.
The majesty of their breeding plumage is only slightly
Tri-Colored Heron seen from Pelican Point at Cherry Creek SP in Arapahoe
County. It was on the opposite side of the inlet and down near the
corner. It flew off but may still be in the park.
