Spurred on by a reliable, but dated, report from a Crestone birder for
Sunday 6 May of male Hooded Warbler and Am Redstart, Bayard and I made the
trek south from Crestone (Liberty Road trailhead) to the Deadman's Creek
riparian area where we dipped on the aforesaid but were instead rewarded for

Bayard and I had a Cassin's Kingbird hawking insects on the south shore of
Bluff Lake. The bird was silent, but overhead showed a white tail tip,
absent of any white or pale tail edgings and a bright white throat

Not wanting to be the only Colorado birders who have not seen a Dickcissel
this summer, Bayard and I followed up this morning on Kathy Mihm Dunning's
post and went to CR X between CR 50 and 52 and were rewarded by two fields
(on the south side of CR X) full of Dickcissels. Bayard and I saw 6

Bayard and I had a Yellow-breasted Chat at our cabin this afternoon in the
Baca Grande at Crestone foraging in Pinyon Juniper habitat at 8100 feet - no
doubt on his way north. Above the Chat in a Pinyon, making an odd pairing,
was a Gray Flycatcher.

This morning, Bayard and I had a brilliant singing male Northern Parula at
8100 ft along Willow Creek in the Baca Grande near Crestone, Saguache
County.
It was accompanied by a Virginia's Warbler, 5 Yellow-rumped (Audubon's) and
a Warbling Vireo.

I drove to Crow Valley this morning and ran into Cole Wild (and friend
Sherry) who promptly pointed me in the direction of a Magnolia Warbler they
had found. Based on that showing, I decided the intelligent thing to do was
to follow him around. He then flushed a Common Poorwill and came upon an

I stopped by the snowbound Gregory Canyon in Boulder today around 4:00 PM for
20 minutes and birded along the road where I saw:

3 Virginia's Warblers
1 Wilson's Warbler
1 Yellow-breasted Chat
1 Least Flycatcher
1 Black-headed Grosbeak
1 Green-tailed Towhee
and multiple Spot

Dear Co-birders:
Most of the returns (7) are in and, after reviewing the feedback and doing some
further research of my own, I am convinced that the bird is an adult Glaucous
Gull, most probably a female and perhaps of the race borrovianus (although
there are some arguments against the latter) t
I encountered late in the afternoon today an adult plumaged white-winged gull
at the edge of the open water at Lake Erie which had completely white
primaries, pale grey mantle, light eye, rounded head, yellow bill with small
red spot at the gonys, pale eye (clear not dusky) and very pink legs. T
After about an hour spent chasing chickadees, I found the Yellow-throated
Warbler at 9:20 AM north of Pine Point in the pines along Lake Estes. It then
moved over to Pine Point where it foraged for about 15 minutes in the company
of chickadees, 3 or more Ruby-crowned Kinglets, a hermit thrus
In addition to the birds accurately detailed by Kathy Dunning in her report,
Bayard and I saw an Ash-throated Flycatcher later in the morning in the NE
corner in and around the farm machinery and fence line. It resisted all our
efforts to turn it into a Brown-crested.

I can corroborate Jack Harlan's report of a Glossy Ibis that I saw in good
light (with 14 white-faced) on Thursday afternoon in the same temporary swampy
location north of Prince Lake #2 -- my apologies for not reporting it earlier.
