It delights me to announce that the Colorado State Land Board today
unanimously agreed to keep Chico Basin Ranch intact once the current lease
expires on Dec 31, 2024. That means a continuation of one lease for one
87,000-acre parcel.
In addition, they’ve decided to put the
Friends of Chico Basin Ranch,
Thank you for your support these past months.
You may be aware that the vote determining whether Chico will be kept
intact or divided is soon approaching. On *Weds, Feb 10th, the State Land
Board commissioners will vote* on whether to keep the ~87,000-acre ranch

As we approach January, and the final decisions affecting the fate of Chico
Basin Ranch (El Paso and Pueblo counties) loom large, I'd like to take a
moment to thank all of you who've taken part in this endeavor.
Most of Aiken Audubon's energy this year has been spent working on
Fellow birders,
The future of birding at Chico Basin Ranch remains unclear.
The State Land Board staff (SLB) announced, in their November board packet,
that public access to Chico Basin Ranch would not be allowed once the
current lease expires in 2024.
With that in mind, the commissioners

The State Land Board just notified me that, since Weds is a holiday - *comments
are due by tomorrow, Nov 10th at 12 noon.*
In addition, they've stated that they'd be willing to negotiate a layered
lease price with us (typically ~$5000 for 3-4 days/year), so we may be able
to work with
Birders,
This Thursday, Nov 12th, the State Land Board (SLB)will be voting on what
"uses" will be allowed at Chico Basin Ranch when the lease expires in 2024.
The SLB is recommending that birding and/or bird-banding be handled via a
"layered lease" that Aiken Audubon or a similar organization
