The rosy-finches have returned to our feeders in Grand Lake, coming several
times every day. We have the brown-capped and gray-crowns, but no sign of the
blacks yet. Flock is about 30 plus in numbers.

A few days ago I watched a Black-billed Magpie and juv. Sharp-shinned Hawk
interacting. I first saw the sharpie chasing the magpie and expected to see a
smack-down and magpie feathers flying. Not so. The chasing would occur in short
bursts and then both birds would land on a fence rail several f
Rufous and Broad-tail Hummers are the primary hummers at our feeders with the
occasional male and female Calliope making appearances. Each evening there are
about 15 hummers having "hummingbird wars" at the feeders. What a show!

The past three days have been "hopping" at the feeders here in Grand Lake. The
unusual birds for us:
Brown-capped Rosy-Finches 40
Evening Grosbeaks 4 (3 females + 1 male)
Black-headed Grosbeak 1 (female)
Bullock's Orioles (1 first year male + 3 females)
The usuals are: broad-tails, siskins,
The past two rainy and cool days we've had 3-4 Brown-capped Rosy-Finches at the
feeders outside Grand Lake again.

There is a sizeable flock of Barrow's Goldeneyes at the Windy Gap, US 40 and
Hwy 125 west of Granby. FOS American White Pelican also seen there.

The south end of Shadow Mountain Reservoir, north of Granby/south of Grand Lake
finally has some open water. Lots of ducks and Canada Geese: wigeons,
buffleheads, mallard, Ring-neck Ducks, shovelers, Ruddy Ducks, Gadwall,
Pied-billed Grebe, Redhead, American Coot, Killdeer and Common Goldeneye.
We've seen Rosy-Finches several times a day since late October at our feeders
here just outside Grand Lake. The flocks have been 30-200 in size with a nearly
equal mix of Brown-capped and Gray-Crowned (including Hepburns). The past
couple weeks the flock has transitioned to nearly all Brown-cap
At our feeders the visits by the mixed flock of Rosy-finches is down in
frequency and numbers the past 3 days. We're down from a flock of over 100
birds to just a few and the visits are only a couple times a day instead of
numerous times per hour.

I have about 100 rosy-finches that come to my feeders several times per day.
I've noticed several birds have leg bandssome with silver bands on the
right leg, some with a red band on the right leg, and one with two florescent
pink on the left leg. Does anyone know about banding rosy-finches
