While it is 95+% frozen, yesterday we found 2 red breasted mergansers in
the marina open water on the pier side.
Before the storm on Wed we found a pacific loon in a small open spot by the
pier. That hole was frozen and it was gone.

Three birders from the south (two from El Paso Co. and me from Pueblo Co.),
came north to walk around the lovely Chatfield Botanical Gardens on this lovely
day, with many other birders. As far as I know, no flycatchers were found. It
is a cool place, which I had not been to before. We saw a

Several people birded Chatfield from morning through mid-afternoon. More
interesting results are:
Red Phalarope - 2!
One in juv plumage seen from both the Lake View area and the Swim Beach
One molting from juv to basic seen out from the east marina sandspit
towards the dam)

Today at Chatfield State Park there was a nice selection of waterbirds
including 4 Common Loons, all in basic plumage, as expected this time of
year. Near the Handicapped Fisherman's access (west side of the Marina) a
lingering Eastern Phoebe was found.

I had some interesting birds at Chatfield this morning. I hiked all the way to
the west side of the creek at the second lake on the east side of the Platte to
the south of Kingfisher bridge. In the clump of trees on the east side of the
first lake, I had several Yellow Warblers and a Red-eye
Very late today, after it had stopped raining, I went to Chatfield Reservoir.
At plum creek [where the picnic tables and bathrooms are], was 1, Eastern
Phoebe. The bird was flying around the bathrooms.[Douglas county]
I left this area to go back to the northern entrance/exit,[Jefferson county].
Birders,
Today, just as the snow and wind hit, I got out to Chatfield to see what I
could.
I did find the Red-necked Grebe hanging with a Western on the close side of
the ice. I saw 1 of the Glaucous and 2 RB Mergansers.
Nothing else of note.

Hi all,
On 12/27, I saw 1,of the Glaucous Gulls, 1, ad. Lesser Black-backed Gull, the
Long-tailed Duck, many, many Common Merganser, with a few Red-breasted
Mergansers also. I did not see the Red-necked Grebe, but it could have been
there. All these birds were seen below the dam, but the Lesser
I stopped by Chatfield after work today. The number of birds has risen from
their "lows" of earlier in the week. "Highlights" today were:
Common Loon - 4
Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 adult on the marina boardwalk
Bonaparte's Gull - 1 adult basic - being harassed by THREE Ring-billed
Gulls!
