For all you gull lovers in land-locked Colorado, we are at peak of spring gull
migration. In Larimer County, the current Hotspots are the Larimer county
landfill and horseshoe reservoir southwest mud flats, in Loveland. It’s also
worth checking the ephemeral pond at the corner of US 287 and 71st
Hi Everyone, Today 2/23 I visited Warren Lake in Fort Collins. Common
Mergansers and Bald Eagles were enjoying all the fish. A Glaucous Gull and two
Iceland (Thayer's) were among the Ring-bills and Herrings.I noticed a Cedar
Waxwing in the median strip along Harmony Road near JFK Blvd. There are
Andy Bankert and I visited Horseshoe Lake in Loveland yesterday evening. We
observed more than 1500 gulls in the mudflats of the southwest corner, easily
scoped from city property along Monroe Avenue.
Species breakdown was:

tomorrow, 12/24? I was considering making a trip up from the Springs and was
hoping to meet up with anyone who knows lay of the land.

It's a gorgeous day at the Larimer landfill. Dave Wade and I estimate 450 gulls
here including 2 immature Lesser Black-backed and 1 immature Herring, 20
Franklin's, and hundreds each of Ring-billed and California.

The landfill in Larimer was busy with people and gulls this afternoon. More
than 600 were present, broken down as follows:
California-500
Ring-billed-100
Franklin's- 6 ad
Thayer's - 2 (1 ad, 1 juv)
Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 ad
American Herring Gull - 1 Imm (2nd cycle)
Unidentified hybrid - 1 Im
This afternoon I visited 3 gull hangouts - Larimer landfill, Horseshoe
Reservoir and Boyd Lake Swim Beach (state park pass required). The highlight
was multiple Lesser Black-backed Gulls at each location (7 in total). A flock
of more than 30 Bonaparte's Gulls bounced between the two lakes. Best
I waited all afternoon for the gulls at Lake Loveland but the interesting ones
never showed up. Only one adult Lesser Black-backed stopped by, briefly. No
Thayer's or California. Half the numbers of Herring and Ring-billed from
yesterday. Moved south by the storm? We'll see.
