John Vanderpoel and I birded the Pawnee Grasslands yesterday. Highlights
were both Longspurs (photos at http://www.bigyear2011.com/), and all the
expected Sparrows (including singing Brewer's, Cassin's and Grasshopper).

At Crow Valley Campground, still closed to vehicles, there were 1 to 2
Red-bellied Woodpeckers. Looks like they could increase there status to
becoming permanate, resident species, with there continuous occurrence there
from last year to now? Would this then represent their furtherest wester

I participated in the Fort Collins Audubon Society field trip today at
Pawnee National Grasslands, led by Bill Miller. Highlights included:

This afternoon 5/15 I made an abbreviated circuit of the Pawnee Grasslands,
stopping at Norma's Grove, Crow Valley Campground, and the auto tour in the
reverse direction. Norma's Grove had two Swainson's Thrushes rather than 30

closed as I heard on the news (they must have misspoke and meant partly

Amazing weather for a drive on the prairie. At Crow Valley Campground we found
the previously reported Red-bellied Woodpecker excavating a tree. A lone
Orange-crowned Warbler was nearby. On the Birder's Route we almost ran over 5

Grasslands today, spending most of our time at Crow Valley Campground. It was
cool and overcast, but no rain. The grasslands look very dry. Crow Valley

planing on heading out there Thursday so I was wondering if some one could
tell me if the Auto tour Roads are in good condition or also flooded out.

Due to flooding of Crow Creek, actions have been taken to address visitor
safety concerns at the Crow Valley Recreation Area on the Pawnee National
Grassland. The 10-unit family campground portion of the area was closed

14 of us from Boulder Bird Club took a trip to the Pawnee Grasslands
yesterday, arriving about 9:30. The Grasslands were noticeably drier than
in past years, and there were virtually no wildflowers, and lower numbers
of fewer birds. But there were lots of Nighthawks, including 8
perched/sleep
18 participants visited Pawnee Grasslands yesterday, stopping at Black Hollow
Res and Windsor Lake on the way back to Denver. Here are the highlishts:

My husband (Lucky Al) and I went out early this morning. Arriving at Crow
Valley at about 6 a.m. and 32 degrees, we drove through only, seeing mostly
Robins, Eurasian Collared Doves and a surprising amount of tent campers.
We then went to the "Birding Tour" on CR 96 etc. for about the first mil
Every year on the Saturday after Memorial Day I try to lead a group out to the
Pawnee Grasslands. Today I had a great time with a 13 person trip over a
full-day (13 hour) out there. We had a pretty good time starting at Crow
Valley Campground early on, even in fairly extreme wind. Crow had a
Norma's Grove west of Weld CR57 on Weld CR100 was pretty quiet but did have a
Cassin's Kingbird.
At the intersection of Murphy's Pasture Road (GR96) and CR69 is a windmill with
a cattle tank full of water. This has always been a bird-attracting area and a
great place to study sparrows. In the

I had a pleasant if not overwhelmingly birdy morning at Crow Valley, the WCR
96 birding trail, and Norma's Grove today 5/5. At Crow Valley, there were
few migrants in evidence: several montane Hermit Thrushes, an Orange-crowned
Warbler. I had one Chestnut-collared Longspur teed up in
23 matches
