The only problem is convincing all your contacts who use skype already
that they should switch to {insert libre alternative here}. For the
majority of protocols we linux users have our own implementation now,
getting people to switch is less of an issue, but for skype...

While I completely understand the irritation with all these
experiments and heavily detailed ideas, I'd rather have people
thinking and loud than quiet and apathetic. If even a few of of them
end up committing code, we're all the better for it. Maybe we can
get a few people started on Vala.
