Well, we finally have an agreement in place with Nvidia for get their
patch into Compiz trunk. Since this bug is really caused by what's in
bug #269904, I'm going to dup this bug to that one. I'll comment in

On Trusty, today's compiz update in trusty-updates
1:0.9.11.3+14.04.20141104-0ubuntu1 superseded the fixed compiz in Chris
Townsend's special fix PPA 1:0.9.11.2+14.04.20140714-0ubuntu1ppa2 and
the flickering is back on the Lenovo Thinkpad W510 running nvidia-340
drivers.

I can consistently reproduce this problem with the nvidia-340 (last one

I have the same flicker problem, (linux mint 17 + mate 64bits, so based
on ubuntu 14.04) with a gtx750ti 340.32 driver with compiz Compiz
0.9.11.2 from the ubuntu 14.04 standard packages but I didn't install
any patch.
For me what seems to do the trick, was enabling:
Utility > Workarounds > Fix sc
compiz patch fixed the issue for me!

I did a fresh install of 14.04 get it tweaked the way I liked it and
after I installed Nvidia drivers 340.24 my Firefox tabs were jerky and
the pages looking funky. Even my VM GUIs were acting wonky. I've only
had the patch installed for several minutes but already I can see the
difference. Than
Installed 340.24 from xorg-edgers on 14.04. Started firefox and google search
home screen flickered like mad. Installed the compiz patch and flickering
stopped. So far the patch is perfect. Will monitor memory consumption after a
full working day.

Christopher i meant 14.10, somewhy when i added the ppa before this updated it
wanted to remove compiz core and unity...
its fixed now with this update, memory usage seems stable at around 60mb and
flickering is gone but i did notice something strange when i minimize a window

My 340.24 joy was short-lived it seems.
While the flickering/wiggling issues are vastly reduced compared to previous
drivers, they still exist.
Before I was ready to go back to my old GT9600 video card it was so bad, but
now its bearable with the issues only appearing at random times spaced apart

after a full day of use the issues I had appear to be gone.
The issues were: screen "shaking" or "wiggling" text on web pages in addition

This is incredibly annoying, I can not rename a folder or file in
Nautilus, or even move the mouse without getting this. I can not work
correctly or even use the terminal inside Unity because
I can confirm the occasional desktop freezes with the testing ppa
version of compiz. It seems the flickering doesnt appear anymore but in
my case desktop froze a few times with keyboard not responding at all
and mouse pointer beeing able to move in single steps every few seconds.

I'm pretty sure that I have micro stuttering (or something similar) in
Teeworlds after applying this patch (using the PPA), at least if VSync is

I had a 9600GT with unbuntu 14.04 and experienced no problem.
I changed for a GeForce GTX 750 Ti and this flickering problem appeared. It
went out using the workaround of post #48.
Now I reverted the workaround of post #48 and I am testing Christopher
Townsend's PPA. So far so good, except that
I have 9600 GT and don't have this bug. I'm using 337 drivers and
currently updating to 340. Also I have proposed enabled on 14.04 LTS.
Everything here is smooth but I had some flickering launcher tooltips in
Unity. This happens very, very rarely and I don't know what triggers it
exactly.

After using my system for a few weeks with the workaround I do notice a
difference in some of the actions I perform in the OS.
Opening the window spread is very sluggish.
After reverting back to nvidia 331 and reverting the workaround, my system is
much more responsive and haven't noticed the vis
I get this same issue on GTX 560 Ti with NVIDIA 337.12, Ubuntu 14.04
64-bit, 3.13.0-24-lowlatency kernel. The workaround from #48 didn't
help me much at all.

Worakround of post #48 seems to work on my system, although I did not
check if there is a drawback in terms of performance.

After a fresh installation of Lubuntu 14.04 (using default graphics
driver Nouveau 3.13.0-24-generic) i experience mouse pointer flicker,
but so far only in Gedit.

still freezes with blinking keyboard indicators after a few minutes of
using.

Ubuntu 14.04 is out and the bug is still not fixed! Ubuntu is unable to
work with nvidia drivers higher than 331.x!

ive found that you can also use "force sync between X and GLX" to fix
it, i belive this works better since i dont think you have to redraw
everything just the damaged part.
