What you call building out an undeployed technology, some would call adding
features. Windows 7 has been in the pipeline since before Vista came out,
if Vista had been a rousing success, we'd still be looking at windows 7 at
some point. None of this of course is arguing that Vista is crap or not,
So I guess I'm not the only one reading the story this way -- either that
or Fox is monitoring our list discussion.
The salient point is that Windows 7 is supposed to be the next desktop
OS. That's my point. They are pretty much admitting that Vista is a
failure.

You see it is not the NSA we need to worry about it is Fox :-)

True...but why use three instead of one? Why shouldn't one app deal with
it?

Spose it doesn't matter who does it, if it's wrong then it's wrong.

This may be true, but there's only so much a program can do to protect
you from all malware. Use anything but IE6, immunize with Spybot, and
always use DropMyRights and there's no need for your AV app to deal
with that stuff.

I was looking at AVG free but it only includes anti virusit seems to me
there are very little true viruses left out there and that most are malware,
adware...spyware etc. I switched to Avast free because it includes all of
the above. If AVG is going to split hairs between viruses and spyware,
It is written for a strong arm processor and not intel/amd for
sure. But it is already a touch OS.
There are two different versions. One for smartphones like the
Motorola Q that does not use touch but buttons and suck for
commands. (Similar to a mouse) the other one for PPC's which is

Sorrybut what? Mobile doesn't have much to do with the desktop

I think Tom is trying to indicate that if Microsoft can't deliver a
reliable "mainstream" OS technology in Vista that bloviating about
a supposedly enhanced and superior next generation release of a

I'm not usually one of the flamers on this list but tonight I am so pissed

I think it is based more on Windows Mobile than their new Touch.
Windows Mobile is now at version 6. So Windows 7 would not be a big
stretch. It also runs in a smaller footprint and uses less resources.

Bill thinks that if he orders you to hop on one foot while using his
computer you will do it. I agree with Bill.

Tom thinks everything having to do with computers was first invented
by Apple, and subsequently stolen by Microsoft.

Yes and no. They have had a windows touch version for quite some
time. It is called Windows Mobile and I use it all the time. I have
a Palm 700W which has Windows Mobile 5 on it. The newest version is
Windows Mobile 6. I wonder where the number 7 came from?

If you are using AVG 8.0, you have a lot of controls to work with. I'll
address your points numerically for clarity.
1. AVG's anti-virus updates should not require a reboot, however,
program updates will. This is standard practice for most programs
that I know of.

Unless you have some real need for standby, you should be powering
down every day. Anyway, why not just change the scheduler to 1PM, or
better, turn off scheduled full system scans entirely? Scan the system
once (overnight), but after that it really shouldn't be necessary.

the following reasons:

I was referring to point-and-shoot digital cameras that have the lag.
It's good to know that DSLR's don't have this issue, but until their
price gets down to a more reasonable level, I'll have to wait. Thanks
for the clarification.

Are we talking DSLR's or point and shoot Digitals
Dunno, but some may find it interesting that my D200's
shutters lag behind my F5's. The specs say the lag is
tiny, but occasionally not swift enough to beat an
eyeblink. YRMV

With a DSLR, the shutter lag is practically non-existent. I shoot with
a Nikon D70 DSLR that I use for everything from sports, racing,
weddings, fires, etc.
With a point-and-shoot digital, the shutter lag can be very frustrating.
