Hi All,
I collected this dance from Gordy Euler in Berkeley in 2012. I'm finally
thinking of calling it, but I didn't collect the name or choreographer. Can any
one help?

Petronella & The Clap. I’m a dancer who grew up with Petronella and Rory O’More
as local stable in David Woodsfellow calling. (I find it funny when callers
say, “as in Petronella,” or, “as in Rory O’More,” and look around and think
there’s only one or two in the hall that have dance either.)

I'd love to collect a few more whole set dances for one night stands.
I have done my version of the Virginia Reel, of course. Some Running Set
figures (though not in a big circle, but, "find another couple and circle
left), Sasha, the Broom Dance and/or the Fan Dance, Blobs, and possibly teach
Seth’s version of the Major Hey (below) as an AABBCC dance, I’ll use it!
Thanks, Seth

On my dance, Fred Park’s Long Drive, it can, of course, be converted to a 32

But I think, with the recent passing of Fred, it would be appropriate not alter
it—at least for the next some period of time.

Hi All,
Years ago I was making up dances with what I was calling a "Sling Shot Hey."
Then cam the Ricochet Hey. Many of us have noted that a Ricochet Hey starting
with robins or larks passing in the center by the right then ricocheting to
swing doesn't work. The Sling Shot Her does:

I, too, have called for a lot of parties and weddings. Keeping it simple—whole
set dances such as The Virginia Reel (without the reel).
And, I actually wrote a book about it: Old-Time Dance Calling for Weddings,
Parties, and One-Night Stands.
I do differentiate weddings from other parties that
Hi All,
First, Hello to Suzanne! Been a long time, now I’m remembering a snowball fight
and lots of laughs, dances, and hanging out.
When I started calling at contra dances, 1984 in Santa Barbara, CA, the first
three dances I learned to call were the Texas Star, and the singing squares

A band wanted to play Mongoose Hop, by Lionel Belasco. Compared to the way it’s
played in the video, it needed to be sped up a little (by the end of the piece
it was closer to contra tempo) and played ABB—adjusted for those 32 bars. So, I
mad up a dance for it:

I don’t recall when I turned the Berkeley dance into a series that used
non-gendered terms, but we accepted it was early in the rage. Prior to hearing
about using these terms I used Men and Women. I didn’t use ladies and gents as
I didn’t want to use terms that were historically class based. A
I have led the “winding a ball of yarn,” for years at barn dances. Used to do
it occasionally at a contra dance—though not since square and other form fell
out of favor.
Then I think it was at a Quaker Yearly Meeting in Wisconsin when they asked a

Pepper's Black, interesting tune and dance.
In looking at this website, some information is confusing and/or outright
incorrect. The website writes in the heading tune is in D major but the key
signature in the transcription with its two flats suggests Bb or G minor. Or,
uh, D Phrygian mode.
The other night at a dance which I was calling the band asked if they could
play Petronella for a dance with that “as in Petronella” move*. Although I have
become less a curmudgeon about Chestnut tunes like Petronella & Rory O’More,
highly influenced by Laurie Andres, I thus asked the dancers

Hi All,
Around 1984, master caller, Larry Edelman lead a calling workshop in Santa
Barbara. The first thing he did was to show us a few square dance books he
collected at used book stores. One of those books was Advanced Square Dance

On this new dance, Name Impending, it’s interesting, and it took me 5 minutes
to figure this out but:
It can start either improper or reverse-improper. That’s because, either way,
three Petronella turns put you on the Lark’s side with your partner (one with

One of the problems with calling heys and this type of timing is the *WHILE*
problem:
While a pair is passing in the middle, someone is looping at the end—a sort
of “ghost” pass. New dancers often abruptly about-face actually cutting off the
path of the next person they’re supposed to pass,
Here's a nice recording of Little Billy Wilson by Jane Rothfield. I don't know
how long it is because I only heard the snippet:

I'd look for other good 40-bar tunes like:
* Three Thin Dimes
* Three-way Hornpipe
* The Snoring
