Upon install (not upgrade) does the rpm database in /var/lib/rpm get
deleted if there is a preexisting set of rpms?
Is there a good way to determine if the rpm database is corrupt? If so, is
there a tool to repair it?

I have a couple of questions, if anyone can answer them I would be very
grateful.
1) How do you associate files with given applications. For example how would I
get .bmp files to be opened with a paint package, or .pdf files with Acrobat ?
2) Is there a way of getting a dial up connect
