I'm using a radeon 7000 card with 3D.
When I run racer (www.racer.nl) or Soldier of fortune, my system starts
hanging.
With racer it started to hang almost immediately. Remote login and killing X
didn't help (I could kill -9 X), X stayed frozen. Giving in a remote reboot
gave me a hard

I was having a problem with a different ATI card and switching from the
default driver to ati solved my mine, hoped it might do the same
