Hello, that's a good question. When I did, was cut up the cheese with a knife just dropped it into pieces and sprinkled around the crockpot. The next time though, I would get a bag of shredded Valvedere or you can use whatever cheese you want I would get a bag of shredded Valvedere in the bag
